Chapter 1

Getting to know the Dutch Shepherd

Origins & history

A story told

The Dutch Shepherd, whose first standard was established on June 12, 1898, updated on December 21, 2019 and definitively recognized by the FCI on May 11, 1955, shares ancestral genetic heritage with the Belgian Shepherd, a relationship strengthened by natural crosses in the Belgian-Dutch border areas. Its presence remains discreet in France, although its qualities are remarkable. Historically, it monitored the agricultural lands of the Netherlands, guiding herds to pastures, fairs and ports. On the farm, his tasks were varied: chicken control, cattle gathering, milk cart pulling and surveillance. Resistant to the elements, tireless and naturally vigilant, it adapted to the decline of sheep farming around 1900 to excel in new roles: police dog, search and rescue, tracking and guide dog. Its remarkable sense of smell and courage make it today a valuable ally of Dutch police forces and the French army. These qualities place it at the level of the German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd, while retaining its natural herding abilities. It is moreover still able to monitor herds.

Character

Daily temperament

The Dutch Shepherd possesses a balanced temperament that combines intelligence and loyalty. Particularly vigilant by nature, it remains attentive to its environment while maintaining a close bond with its master. Its independent character and ability to work autonomously are traits inherited from its original function as a herding dog. A hard worker and persevering, it excels in the tasks entrusted to it, demonstrating both obedience and initiative. Its sociability allows it to collaborate effectively with other dogs, particularly for herd guarding.

Physical

Breed standard

The Dutch Shepherd is a medium-sized dog, harmoniously built with powerful musculature without heaviness. Its body structure corresponds to that of a trotting dog, with a body slightly longer than tall (ratio 10/9). Its head, wedge-shaped when viewed from above and in profile, is proportioned to the body with a skull/muzzle ratio of 1/1. The skull is flat with a slight but distinct stop. The eyes, dark in color and almond-shaped, are slightly slanted. The ears, of medium size, are carried erect and high in action. The nose is black, the lips are well-pigmented and tight, with a complete bite in scissor formation. The neck, without dewlap, blends harmoniously into the body line. The back is straight and robust, extended by a solid loin. The croup is slightly sloped. The chest is deep and sufficiently long, with moderately sprung ribs and a well-developed forechest. The belly is slightly tucked up. The front legs are solid, well-muscled, with robust bone without heaviness. The shoulders are well-laid and sloping, the upper arms of the same length as the shoulder blades. The hind legs are powerful, well-muscled, without excessive angulation, with thigh and leg of similar length. The feet, both front and hind, are oval with tight, arched toes, black nails and dark pads. The breed has no dewclaws. The tail, reaching the hock at rest, is carried straight or in a slight curve, elegantly raised in action, never curling. The coat comes in three varieties: - Short coat: hard, tight, with woolly undercoat - Long coat: straight, laid, rough, with woolly undercoat - Hard coat: very thick, shaggy, with dense undercoat The coat is always brindle on a golden background (from light sand to reddish-brown) or silver, with a desired black mask. The brindle must be visible all over the body, including ruff, breeches and tail. Standard sizes: Males: 57-62 cm Females: 55-60 cm

Nutrition

Feed your pet well

The Dutch Shepherd is not a picky eater. Whether it is traditional preparation or industrial form such as dry food, as long as it is well-balanced, it will suit him perfectly. Being a carnivore, his diet must include a significant portion of animal proteins, preferably in the form of meat. However, if he is fed mainly with dry food, this source of animal protein will already be present in the product composition. A supplementary supply of raw veal bones is also beneficial for strengthening his jaws and the natural cleaning of his teeth. This dog has no particular problems with excessive appetite or eating difficulties. The essential thing is to provide him with complete and balanced nutrition, in line with his nutritional needs.

Training

Training your pet

The education of the Dutch Shepherd must be conducted with fairness and without excess. Its natural sensitivity requires a gentle master, where voice and gestures are sufficient as learning tools. Early socialization is paramount to foster positive interactions with humans and peers. Its intelligence allows for the exploitation of different training methods, play being particularly recommended as it mobilizes its natural abilities. This approach, more stimulating and enriching than the use of treats, corresponds better to its deep nature, even if food rewards can occasionally serve as a lure. Although adaptable to different types of families, it requires a daily commitment to meet its physical and mental needs through regular exercise and activities.
