Orylag

The Orylag is a domestic rabbit descended from the selection of the Rex rabbit breed whose coat has hair and guard hairs of the same size. A natural genetic mutation gives these rabbits the finest hairs in the animal kingdom (15 micrometers), with exceptional density − 8,000 to 10,000 per square centimeter. It is homogeneous and produced throughout the year (INRA, 2002). The basic colors of this coat are a shimmering brown, called "castor" and a speckled gray, called "chinchilla" by analogy with the fur of these animals. Subsequently added to this was the "ash" color (INRA, 2002). Scientific research tends to achieve perfect fur and leather in the Orylag, while preserving the superior quality of the meat, favored by the privileged conditions of breeding (INRA, 2002).
