Chapter 1
Getting to know the Saxon Gold
Origins & history
A story told
It appeared in 1953 in East Germany, after decades of selection, undertaken initially by Richard Beunack, resident of Röhrsdorf and continued by his son; it results from a cross between the fawn rabbit and the black and red rabbit. This breed was admitted to the German standard in 1961 and to the French standard in 1984.
Physical
Breed standard
It can be recognized by its luminous red/gold color, the underside of the body being a paler and dull. Its ears, very consistent and hairy, measure between 8 and 10 cm, and ideally between 8.5 and 9.5 cm. Its fur is dense and quite lustrous. Its body is short, stocky and rounded, and it has a small short head, strong and wide in the male, and more refined in the female.
