Getting to know the Welsh terrier
Origins & history
A story told
The old English terrier, of Celtic origin Old English Black and Tan Terrier or Old English Broken-haired Terrier, and the fox-terrier are probably its ancestors. The Welsh Terrier was originally a fox and badger hunter in its native Wales. These dogs existed a very long time ago. Over the years, they have changed little. At first glance at a Welsh Terrier, one might confuse this dog with an Airedale, which itself resulted from crosses between the Old English Terrier, the Otterhound and the Welsh. These two dogs actually share many characteristics including body shape, coat color and a penchant for otter hunting. However, the Welsh Terrier is about twenty centimeters smaller than the Airedale. These dogs were the first to be presented at dog shows in 1885. Painter Pascal Margat made it his pet, at the heart of most of his works since 2010.
