Origins & history
A story told
Its origins are not known with great certainty; there was a dog of this type, with hard coat and short legs for centuries in Scotland. It was not until 1815 that the name Scottish Terrier appeared for the first time in a work called Recreations Natural History. The creator of the current breed is certainly Captain Mackie who, during a trip to Scotland, acquired short-legged hard-coated terriers from various breeders. Historical milestones

Character
Daily temperament
The Scottish is very distinctive. It has a very particular silhouette. It is very distant with strangers and makes no effort to appear friendly. It has a strong personality. From its arrival in its new home, it chooses its master, to whom it has an unwavering attachment. It is pleasant with the rest of the family but always keeps its distance. In its youth, it is not very mischievous and is not destructive. It matures very quickly. With children, it is playful but will quickly show limits not to be exceeded. It is not sporty; a short walk is enough for it. It loves water, so one must be wary of swimming pools into which it will dive and which could be fatal for it. It is often said to have a bad temper when it simply has CHARACTER. It is fairly stubborn and fussy; one should avoid changing its habits. A difference in character can be noted between black-colored dogs and fawn-colored ones; the latter are more turbulent but also more playful.

Health
Health watch
A bit more sophisticated than its cousins, the Scottie is a bit more fragile health-wise; therefore, one must be rigorous in its diet, giving it well-adapted food and not changing it. Some subjects tend to have dandruff and oily hair, especially in blacks.

Therefore, give it baths with special shampoo and take care to maintain its coat well. The Scottish does not live very long, approximately a decade, of course, there are always exceptions, but those who exceed the age of 12 are rare. Scottish Cramp: This is a pathology that seems to exist only in the Scottie. The symptoms are not easy to detect. When the dog is resting or engaged in moderate exercise, nothing appears, but when it is nervous or has run a lot, its back arches and its locomotion becomes difficult. The anomaly lies in the nervous system; it does not affect the animal's intelligence or vigilance, nor its health; its life expectancy is in no way shortened. Scotties affected by this cramp are not disabled and remain excellent companion dogs. Violent exercise and causes of agitation should be avoided, and the symptoms will appear little or not at all.

Maintenance
Daily care
A Scottish should be stripped and never clipped (except certain parts of the body); clipped hair is much more difficult to maintain; the coat becomes soft and curly; the color becomes dull. Stripping being specialist work, one must consult an experienced groomer. The Scottie should be stripped every three months or so. It should be maintained, once a week, by starting with brushing the hair in the direction of the hair all over the body, combing through all the fur with an iron comb without forgetting underneath the body and the legs; the hair in this area tangles easily, so care must be taken not to leave any knots. The Scottie can be bathed but one must always use a shampoo specially formulated for hard hair. The black Scottish, as well as the brindle, having a somewhat strong odor, can be washed regularly. The "fawn" does not need to be shampooed often; it has no odor, and its coat gets dirty much less because it is often much harder. To untangle burrs or hair on the belly and back, it is possible to sprinkle cornstarch.
