Chapter 1

Getting to know the Teckel

Origins & history

A story told

The Dachshund, originating from Germany, was originally used for hunting foxes, rabbits and badgers, which it drove from their burrows. Its name comes from the word Dachs, badger in German, through Dachshund, badger dog. The two designations used today in Germany, Dackel and Teckel, are abbreviations of it; Dackel being more common. The first signs of short-legged dogs are found in the Middle Ages. The first specimens similar to today's Dachshunds appeared in the 17th century and the varieties of the breed continued to develop until the 19th century. Among its ancestors are the Basset and the Brachet. Short-legged dogs identical can also be seen on Egyptian frescoes, the only difference being that they had straight ears and not drooping ears.

Character

Daily temperament

There are three varieties of Dachshund. There are long-haired, short-haired and wire-haired Dachshunds. Regarding size, there are dwarf Dachshunds, "Kaninchen" or miniature and "standard" which are larger and more massive than miniature Dachshunds. On average, the standard Dachshund weighs between 9 and 12 kg, while the Kaninchen will weigh less than 3.5 kg. The age that Dachshunds can expect to reach (life expectancy) is estimated on average at 12.7 years, it can reach 14 years. Despite its small size and short legs, the Dachshund is a dynamic and active dog. It enjoys outdoor walks in nature, such as in forests. It is a dog that needs to exercise to be happy. Its maximum speed is 30 km/h. Their elongated back can sometimes, but rarely, lead to intervertebral problems that can cause paralysis of the hindquarters. They should not be allowed to jump from great heights or descend from great heights to avoid back injuries.

Physical

Breed standard

An argument can be made in favor of classification in the group of detection dogs or terrier dogs. Originally, the breed was developed for hunting to track prey using odors. One of its flagship behaviors, persistence in digging, probably comes from the category of terrier dogs. The Dachshund represents group 4 by itself in FCI classification. 9 varieties can be distinguished in FCI classification depending on size and coat length.

Standard: dog measuring more than 35 cm chest circumference Dwarf: dog with chest circumference between 30 and 35 cm (with 2 cm tolerance). Rabbit: dog with chest circumference less than 30 cm (with 2 cm tolerance).

In miniature Dachshunds, we find the dwarfs and rabbits of the FCI classification (see the links at the end of the articles). With three varieties of hair (short, hard and long), three sizes (rabbit, dwarf and standard) and three colors (unicolor, bicolor or harlequin (merle gene). The Dachshund does not come down to just 3 coat varieties and 3 size varieties, it can also have a significant number of coats. It is important, especially for a breeder, to know the base colors which are as follows according to varieties:

Fawn: all coats; Black and tan: all coats; Wild boar: hard coat only. To the three basic coats are added 3 modifying genes:

Chocolate: all coats, all colors (tolerated in fawn); Brindle: short-haired fawn only; Harlequin: all coats, only on black and tan and chocolate and tan.
