Chapter 1
Getting to know the Jindo coréen
Origins & history
A story told
Written evidence attesting to the presence of the Korean Jindo does not exist. The best accepted theory is that the breed is native to Jindo Island and has retained its own morphological characteristics for thousands of years due to rare external exchanges. In Korea, the Jindo is called "Jindo-Kae" or "Jindo-Kyon," "Kae" or "Kyon" being the Korean word meaning "dog".
Character
Daily temperament
The Korean Jindo has a highly developed hunting instinct with a good sense of orientation. It is bold, vigilant, attentive and impetuous. It is not easily tempted. This breed is extremely loyal to its master. It easily accepts a new owner, but will never forget its attachment to the first. Generally speaking, the Korean Jindo is not very sociable with other animals, especially males, so it is important to socialize it properly. It is clean and is not a big eater.
Physical
Breed standard
The Korean Jindo is a medium-sized dog, well proportioned. Dark brown in color, the eyes are rather small, almond-shaped with a lively expression. The ears of medium dimensions are triangular in shape, thick and perfectly erect. Sickle-shaped or curled, the end of the tail touches the back or flank; when the dog is in action, it stands upright without swinging. Lowered, the end of the tail should reach the hock. The undercoat is soft, dense, light-colored, sufficient to support the top coat. The top coat is stiff and somewhat apart from the body. The hair is shorter on the head and limbs. The tail hair and behind the thighs is longer than on the rest of the body. The coat of the Korean Jindo is fawn red, white, black, black and tan, wolf-gray or brindle.
