Chapter 1

Getting to know the French Tricolor Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The breed was created in 1957 from the Poitevin, the Billy and the Anglo-French Tricolor. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne may have been used in the development of the breed. The first standard was written in 1965. The breed is rare outside metropolitan France.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard does not describe a typical temperament for the breed. It is an independent, energetic, courageous and fairly difficult to train dog (especially recall).

Physical

Breed standard

The French Tricolor is a large-sized scent hound, sufficiently built and muscular. The back is supported and well attached. Deep and well descended, the chest reaches at least the point of the elbows. The ribs are long and not too flat. The abdomen is very slightly raised. The tail is quite long, carried high and elegantly. Not too important, the head is fairly elongated with a well-marked occipital bump and stop. The large eyes of brown color are sometimes ringed with black. The ears are slightly turned and not too flexible and long. The coat is short and rather fine. The coat is tricolor: black, white and tan. The tan color is preferably bright or copper.
