Getting to know the English Foxhound

Origins & history

A story told

The stud book of the Masters of the English Foxhound Masters of Foxhounds Association dates from the eighteenth century. The owner of a Foxhound can easily trace the pedigree of his dog. There were up to 250 Foxhound packs in Great Britain. The English Kennel Club republished an interim standard for the Foxhound. The International Cynological Federation (FCI) recognized this breed in 1964. The International Foxhound Association was created in 2012 to support and promote the Foxhound as a 'Working Breed' in the same manner as the Border Collie.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the English Foxhound as a dog overflowing with strength and endurance, naturally a hunter. It is a friendly and non-aggressive breed.

Physical

Breed standard

The English Foxhound is a large, powerful and well-proportioned hunting hound. Set high, the tail is carried erect and never curled over the back. The head is well-proportioned, with a flat skull of medium width and only a slightly marked stop. Medium in size, its eyes are hazel or brown in color. The ears are set high and hang well against the cheeks. The coat is short and dense, weather-resistant. All hound coat colors are acceptable.
