Origins & history
A story told
The Pont-Audemer Spaniel originates from the Pont-Audemer region, near Marais Vernier, in Normandy where it is traditionally used to hunt waterfowl. In 1886, the Société canine havraise undertook to select it. After World War II, only a few specimens of this small chestnut spaniel remained and crosses with the Irish Water Spaniel were made to save the breed. The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is very rare. The total population of the breed is approximately three hundred individuals in metropolitan France. A few breeders continue the breed, mainly in Normandy and Picardy.
Character
Daily temperament
The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is described by the Société centrale canine as gay, balanced and obedient. It adapts to city life provided it benefits from long daily walks.
Physical
Breed standard
The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is a sturdy and vigorous spaniel whose body fits almost in a square. Attached almost at the height of the loin line, the tail is carried quite straight. It is generally docked to one-third; when the tail is not docked, it should be of medium length, slightly curved. Amber dark or hazel in color, the eyes are rather small. The top of the skull and the long ears are well covered with curly silk framing the head, giving the impression of wearing a wig. The coat is slightly coarse on the body, curly, neither flat nor curly. The coat is brown, brown and grey speckled preferably, with dead leaf reflections.
