Getting to know the Donggyeongi
Origins & history
A story told
According to the South Korean Administration of Cultural Heritage, Donggyeongi often appear in ancient documents or works of art and that consequently, they are bearers of historical and cultural significance. However, during the Japanese colonial era, they were slaughtered en masse both for their skin and by their resemblance to komainu, one of the visible images in Shinto shrines and in royal symbols. Once the liberation of South Korea, they were still very poorly regarded because they had a very short tail and so they were considered as bearers of bad luck and as useless and handicapped dogs. Later, hybridization with other breeds accentuated the threat that was already dangerous to the Donggyeongi population. Today, it is possible to see them in their region of origin, that is to say in the Gyeongju region, located in the south Korean peninsula.
