The Chippiparai is a greyhound-type dog breed from southern India. Probable descendant of the Saluki or Sloughi, it is mainly raised in the Periyar Lake region. Being a good hunting dog, it is also used for house guarding. Raised by royal families in Chippiparai in the Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu, it was considered a symbol of royalty and the dignity of the rulers of Tirunelveli and Madurai.

The Chippiparai is very active during its youth. Since it is a hunting breed still used for this activity, it needs a lot of exercise.

The general appearance is very similar to that of the Sloughi and the Rampur Greyhound. The breed is characterized by a fawn coat color, black truffle and eyes, a wide chest, a tucked-up abdomen, and a long curved tail. Occasionally, reddish-brown or gray coats can be found. The skin is fine and gray in color. It is a medium-sized dog, around 25 inches or 63 cm at the shoulder. A study published in 2015 gives an average in males of about 63 cm, and in females of about 56 cm at the shoulder, which makes the Chippiparai a medium-sized breed. Its short coat is very tight, which produces a shiny effect on the entire coat if regularly groomed. A shiny coat, giving a general appearance of shell, is highly desired. This dog is also less parasitized by ticks and fleas, its short coat facilitating detection.
