Retrievers are moreover excellent swimmers and have a very waterproof coat. Many dog breeds specialize in retrieval, notably the breeds in section 8.1 of the FCI nomenclature, but also certain spaniels. The most well-known retriever breeds are of British origin: the Golden Retriever and the Curly-Coated Retriever (which is the oldest retriever breed, dating from the sixteenth century) and the Flat-Coated Retriever. There is also the Chesapeake Bay Retriever (of American origin), the Labrador Retriever (of Canadian origin) and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (of Canadian origin).
