The Majorcan Shepherd is a sheepdog, guard, and defense dog originating from Spain. It was recognized in the eighteenth century. It appears to have been used since ancient times in the guarding of all kinds of animals: turkeys, pigs, cattle, goats, and especially sheep, as well as in the guarding of houses and property.

Its exact origins are unclear, but it is believed that it arrived in the thirteenth century with the conquest of King James I or shortly thereafter, and over the centuries, the shepherds and rural people of Majorca gave it characteristics very much its own which differentiated it from other dogs of the islands and Europe.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Majorcan Shepherd Dog

Character

Daily temperament

It is an intelligent and faithful dog, which allows it to develop vigilance and defense tasks. It has always been appreciated in Majorca for its pastoral qualities and physical resistance. It is very affectionate and faithful to its human, whom it considers a friend, although its appreciation must be gained by treating it well. On the other hand, it is very wary of strangers through its vigilance and does not accept commands from these. Having been selected for its autonomy capacity, it knows how to take initiatives, so it is potentially very independent. Its education requires patience and consistency, requests must show a real interest, otherwise it could have difficulty obeying. It is a dog that requires a lot of physical and mental exertion. It is affectionate with children and very patient with them. It is docile and affectionate with its close circle. The Majorcan Shepherd is very shy and reserved when young and its sensitivity can be very high: socialization is therefore essential as it learns very quickly both positive and negative experiences. It is courageous and can show itself somewhat quarrelsome.

Physical

Breed standard

It is a large dog: its size varies from 66 to 73 cm for a male and from 62 to 68 cm for a female with a weight of approximately 40 kg. A tolerance of one centimeter more or less is admitted. The coat is short and well-laid with a length of 1.5 to 3 cm. The undercoat is very fine, well-fitted to the skin. There is a long-haired variety where the coat can be slightly wavy in the lumbar region with a length of approximately over seven centimeters depending on the time of year, the coat being longer in winter. It exceeds the average at the fringe of the tail, at the tip of the ears, and at the back of the limbs. In both varieties, the coat should be soft, resistant, and quite fine. It is entirely black (jet black, ordinary black, or pitch black and their respective shades). White can be admitted only on the chest, under the neck in the form of a fine tie, and on the front and back feet. Jet black is the most sought-after. The tail is attached horizontally and of circular section, quite thick at its root. It is not docked.
