Chapter 1

Getting to know the Old Danish Pointer

Origins & history

A story told

The origin of the breed dates back to 1710 when Morten Bak of Glenstrup, between the cities of Randers and Hobro, crossed for eight consecutive generations dogs of Bohemians (or stray dogs according to sources) with farm dogs of the region. The farm dogs could have as ancestors Saint-Hubert dogs and for the Bohemian dogs Spanish pointing dogs and also scent hounds including the Saint-Hubert dog. The breed is then selected as a pure breed under the name of Bak dog. The breed is little known outside its homeland.

Character

Daily temperament

The character of the Ancestral Danish Pointing Dog is described in the FCI standard as a calm and stable dog, determined and courageous.

Physical

Breed standard

The Ancestral Danish Pointing Dog is a medium-sized and heavily built dog, whose body fits in a rectangle. Sexual dimorphism is very marked: the male is powerful and solid, the female is characteristically lighter and of a more lively character. The neck is long with dewlaps. The chest is broad and muscular. The thighs are powerful and well developed. Quite wide at the root, the tail tapers towards its tip. Of medium length, it almost reaches the hock and is carried naturally hanging. The head is short and wide, without a pronounced stop with a broad forehead. The nose is liver colored. The ears are attached rather low, wide and slightly rounded at their tips. When the ear is stretched toward the nose, a little more than the anterior third of the muzzle is exposed. The coat is short and tight, somewhat hard to the touch. The hair, regularly distributed, should entirely cover the body. The color is white marked with brown. The brown, preferably dark, is distributed in a few large patches or numerous small speckles.
