Chapter 1

Getting to know the Bohemian Shepherd

Origins & history

A story told

The origins of this dog are rooted in the Chodove people who lived in the 14th century in forests in southern Bohemia, and used it as a guard and herd dog. Proper breeding began around the 16th century but until the early 20th century, the Bohemian Shepherd was only used locally as a herding and guard dog and only began to be known at the end of the 19th century. The most reputed painting representing a Bohemian Shepherd is by Mikoláš Aleš and the most beautiful statue is a monument sculpted by Cenek Vosmik representing Jan Sladky Kozina with his dog. The most well-known book about the Bohemian Shepherd, Psohlavci, was written by Alois Jirásek at the end of the 19th century.
