Chapter 1

Getting to know the Belgian Malinois

Character

Daily temperament

It brings together all the qualities required to be a shepherd dog, guard dog, defense dog and service dog. Its lively and alert temperament and assured character, with no fear or aggression, must be visible in the body attitude and the proud and attentive expression of its sparkling eyes. It can quite well be considered a family dog or also a herding dog or a working dog (military, police, etc.), depending on its training. It is a dog with many roles that has very great learning abilities, which makes it rather malleable.

Physical

Breed standard

Physically, the Malinois is a lupoid of medium size, of mediolline construction, which combines the power of its bone structure and dry musculature with the general elegance of its lines and the suppleness of its gait. It is an alert dog with great learning abilities: if they are regularly stimulated, it can become very obedient. A dog with medium-length fawn-black coat, it is a rustic dog that requires little maintenance. The normal average measurement for a male Belgian shepherd dog is 62 cm at the withers.
