Chapter 1
Getting to know the Bearded collie
Origins & history
A story told
This dog breed was in vogue in the 1980s, along with the Bobtail. Its relative difficulty of maintenance led it to be replaced by other smaller or short-haired breeds. Among its ancestors are probably Polish sheepdogs, Scottish sheepdogs, and Bobtails. This dog was used to drive herds of sheep in the Highlands: its trace is found in this role as early as the sixteenth century. After the Second World War, at the end of the 1940s and beginning of the 1950s, an English breeder, G.O Willson, is at the origin of the subjects as we know them today.
Character
Daily temperament
This dog is full of energy and needs exercise, it is not suitable for elderly and inactive owners, who experience difficulties moving around. It is affectionate and appreciates the company of children. It is a calm and non-aggressive dog.
Physical
Breed standard
It is a medium-sized dog with a body longer than it is high, of solid construction: it measures 51 to 53 cm for the female and 53 to 56 cm for the male, with a weight of 20 to 30 kg. It has long hair, a soft and tight undercoat, including under the mouth: it seems to wear a beard. Its ears are drooping, of medium size.
