The Singapura is a cat breed probably originating from Singapore and developed in the United States. It is characterized by its seal ticked tabby coat of short hair and its size: the Singapura is considered the smallest cat breed in the world.

Its almond-shaped eyes are very large in relation to its round head, its ears have a wide base with a not very pointed tip. The development of the breed is marked by a controversy over the origin of the founding cats: while they were initially claimed to be street cats from Singapore, a breeder was able to demonstrate that they originated from the United States. An investigation conducted by the Cat Fancier Association (CFA) led to the conclusion that Singapuras form a natural breed, although the controversy continues. Singapore's tourism office made it its national mascot. The breed, present since the late 1980s, is still very poorly represented in France.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Singapura

Origins & history

A story told

It is possible that the Singapura is the result of a cross between a Burmese and an Abyssinian, which was sometimes the description given by CFA judges to describe the breed. These claims are based on the fact that the founding cats of the Meadow were described as Abyssinians on their import certificates and that these breeders were also breeders of Abyssinians, Burmese and Siamese. The resemblance to the Burmese-Abyssinian cross, as well as the small litter size which is rare in natural breeds, have added further doubts to the Meadow story. Recent DNA studies conducted in 2007 on feline DNA show that there is minimal genetic difference between the Singapura and the Burmese, which confirms the hypothesis that the Singapura is not a natural breed.

Character

Daily temperament

Character traits remain perfectly individual and are above all a function of each cat's history. However, the Singapura is described by the CFA as active, curious and playful. They are affectionate and desire human contact. The Singapura does not like the cold and is well-adapted to apartment living.

Physical

Breed standard

The Singapura is a small to medium-sized cat of moderate build and muscular of semi-cobby type, with a short and very fine coat. It is the smallest cat breed in the world: an adult female weighs on average 1.8 kg and a male 2.7 kg. The head is round, with ears wide at the base, not very pointed and deep; the inside of the ear must be well-lined. The almond-shaped eyes must be well-spaced from each other and yellow, hazel or green in color. The nose must be brick-colored bordered with dark brown. The tail is thin, slightly shorter than body length with a rounded tip. The legs are strong and taper toward a small, oval foot. The coat is brown ticked tabby, which means that each hair is alternately light then dark colored, typically consisting of two light bands and two dark bands. Only one color is recognized by feline breeding registries: sepia agouti, described as dark brown ticking on a warm old ivory color. The lower parts of the body, such as the chest, muzzle and chin are lighter in color. The coat should be fine, silky and without undercoat.

These equivalences are statistical benchmarks drawn from published veterinary tables. Every animal ages at its own pace, depending on genetics, diet and care. This calculator is neither a diagnosis nor veterinary advice.

Health

Health watch

Breeders are concerned with a problem of uterine muscle weakness that does not allow fetal expulsion. This problem was present in one of the founding cats and still appears in some females. Individuals affected by this defect often require a cesarean section. Another genetic problem may be a defect in a tail bone, which does not have the normal shape.

There are no other genetic problems in the Singapura, although some breeders are concerned about the low genetic diversity of the breed promoting inbreeding. According to genetic analysis conducted in 2007 on 22 different breeds, the Singapura is the breed with the lowest genetic diversity. The possibility of outcrossing with another breed has been mentioned by CFA breeders but has not received sufficient attention, as they prefer to use Singapuras from other countries genetically distant from the CFA lineage. The average lifespan is between 11 and 15 years.
