Chapter 1

Getting to know the Siberian (cat)

Origins & history

A story told

Its origin is probably from Transcaucasia and Iran and this breed is said to have arrived with settlers from this region in southern Siberia where it settled. This breed thus formed naturally in southern Siberia. The Siberian cat is famous for its very robust health and accommodating character. The Siberian cat arrived in North America in 1990, via the Starpoint Cattery. Males can weigh 5 to 10 kg and females, which are much smaller, are between 3 kg and 8 kg. In spring, they lose their thick winter coat for the summer one, much less full.

Character

Daily temperament

If the Siberian cat was once very wild, it today has nothing to do with its ancestors. It is a very sociable, intelligent cat and overflowing with affection. Very attached to its owner, it loves to communicate with him through play. This aspect of its character also makes it a cat appreciating the presence of children or other animals by its side. It is a breed of cats called 'dog-cats' for their resemblance to canines. They enjoy ball games and even taking walks on a leash. Moreover, they adapt very easily to changes. It is however important to note that the Siberian can take a little time to no longer be shy in the presence of strangers. Consequently, when one becomes a new owner of a Siberian cat, one must arm oneself with patience at the beginning because it is possible that he will show himself somewhat distant. But once he knows his new master, his "dog-cat" character will come out and he will ask for affection by following his master wherever he goes or waiting for him when he leaves the house. Also, the Siberian can be a bit fearful and take flight at the arrival of strangers in the house, but as soon as he has gained confidence in them, he will not hesitate to come ask them for caresses.

Health

Health watch

The Siberian is a rustic breed, that is to say that true Siberians fall ill very rarely. The Siberian has two known genetic diseases (if crossed with other breeds): PKD and HCM. Both are detected after the age of two years by ultrasound performed by a specialized veterinarian. There is no genetic screening. Vaccination is annual.
