The Siamese is a cat breed originating from Thailand. The first Siamese arrived in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Their success was such that they quickly reached the United States. At that time, only seal points were recognized, but gradually a very wide palette of colors was added. The breed underwent a major evolution in the 1970s when breeders accentuated its physical characteristics. The Americans sought a more elegant body and a longer head.

The English, on the other hand, preferred to work on the positioning of the ears, lower and larger, and the oriental shape of the eyes. Today, the best Siamese combine the qualities of American and English cats. The origin is found in Southeast Asia: the breed could descend from the sacred cats of the temples of Siam (hence their name). These cats were already depicted in certain manuscripts found in Ayutthaya (ancient capital of Siam) dating from 1350. A German naturalist also described cats with dark extremities in the course of the 19th century. It is said that this cat was sacred to the kings of Siam and that they were carefully guarded at the palace and reserved for members of the royal family. Other legends tell on the contrary that at the arrival of the English and French, the king had hidden his favorite cats, Khao Manee, and gave Siamese as gifts to foreigners, passing them off as sacred to avoid having his true lucky cats stolen.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Siamois

Origins & history

A story told

The breed was first observed outside its Asian cradle in 1884, when the British Consul-General in Bangkok, Edward Blencowe Gould, brought a couple of Siamese cats to England for his sister, Mrs. Veley (who would later be the co-founder of the Siamese Cat Club in 1901). The cats were shown at the Crystal Palace in 1885 and, the following year, another couple of cats was brought back by a certain Mrs. Vyvyan and her sister. A small number of cats were brought in the following years; they thus formed the basis of the entire breed in Great Britain. A Frenchman named Auguste Pavie also brought back Siamese in 1885 as did a certain M. Oustalet, professor at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The first standard of the breed was issued in 1892 by the GCCF. Two years earlier, the Siamese was exported to the United States. The creation of enthusiast clubs soon followed in England from 1901 onwards. From the 1950s, the Siamese experienced great popularity and its physique changed. The body and legs lengthened and thinned, the tail as well, the ears enlarged. From the 1980s onwards, the so-called 'traditional' Siamese became increasingly unpopular and the standard adapted to the new physique of the modern Siamese. However, some breeders campaigned for the preservation of the original Siamese. In the late 1980s, the creation of the Thai breed allowed breeders to present Siamese closer to the original physique, hence the nickname of old or traditional Siamese frequently given to Thai.

Character

Daily temperament

In general, the Siamese is very close to its owner. Some people say they converse with their Siamese; the latter can be very talkative and communicative. It is an intelligent and affectionate cat. It comes when called, quickly understands prohibitions and tends to follow its human companion spontaneously and in many cases systematically. It can easily be taught to walk on a leash and taken everywhere, even on vacation, because, unlike most other cats, it develops an attachment to humans rather than to territory. Very attached to its master, it tolerates solitude poorly. It generally chooses one person in the household and does not leave them. For all these reasons, they are said to be 'dog-cats'.

Method: AAFP/AAHA table: 15 human years in year one, +9 in year two, then +4 per year.

These equivalences are statistical benchmarks drawn from published veterinary tables. Every animal ages at its own pace, depending on genetics, diet and care. This calculator is neither a diagnosis nor veterinary advice.

Health

Health watch

Studies based on data from Swedish insurance companies have demonstrated that Siamese and its derived breeds have a high mortality rate compared to other breeds. The majority of deaths are due to neoplasms and mammary tumors. Siamese also have a high morbidity rate.

The species is more subject to gastrointestinal problems, but can also be weakened by diseases of the lower urinary tract. If many Siamese squinted not long ago (in order to compensate for an abnormal connection of the optic chiasm, resulting from the albino allele at the origin of the coloring of the least warm parts of the body), selections made by breeders over the years have almost eliminated strabismus problems in the Siamese.
