The Ragdoll is a cat breed originating from the United States. The name of this large cat comes from a surprising particularity: when picked up, it becomes as soft as a rag doll, "ragdoll" in English.

Chapter 1
Getting to know the Ragdoll
Origins & history
A story told
The breed originates from the United States, more precisely from Riverside in California. It was created in 1963 by Ann Baker, a breeder of Persians. Ann Baker mated a white, semi-long-haired female cat named Josephine with a male of unknown origin named Blackie. In the United States, the Ragdoll was recognized as early as 1965. In 1969, a couple of breeders, Laura and Denny Dayton, buy four Ragdolls from Ann Baker and establish a breeding program under the name Blossom Time. Ann Baker creates the International Ragdoll Cat Association (I.R.C.A) in 1971. She maintains control over the descendants of Josephine and imposes many constraints on other Ragdoll breeders, so that in 1994, a group of breeders decides to cut ties with the Ragdoll world and creates a new breed from this breed, named Ragamuffin. In Europe, the first Ragdolls, direct descendants of Josephine, were imported to Great Britain in 1981. It was two English female friends who, intrigued by what they heard in American media, decided to each start a breeding program. They each procure a pair from the "Blossom Time" cattery. These four cats are largely responsible for establishing the breed in Europe. A club of enthusiasts "British Ragdoll Club" was founded in 1987 and the breed was recognized by the GCCF in 1991; a year later, FIFe did the same.

Meanwhile, the Ragdoll is introduced to Germany (1985) and France (1986) by Noëlle Vialatte at the "Chatterie de Gailande" in Biarritz. It is a couple from one of the first two breeding programs of the English friends: "Patriarca Ragabarfield", a blue colorpoint male, and "Patriarca Rag Blossom", a bicolor seal female. The breed was recognized that same year by the ANCFF. The first litter born in France was from Noëlle Vialatte in 1988. The founder of the breed, Ann Baker, died in January 1997.
Character
Daily temperament
Ragdolls are generally described as dog-cats (follow their masters wherever they go) very close to humans, balanced, calm, gentle, discreet and very affectionate. This cat would also show great discretion even in its meowing, which is very soft. It is homebody and adapts very easily to family life in an apartment as well as in a house (under supervision). The Ragdoll is said to be a fearless cat that submits easily and is sociable with other animals. It does not realize the danger, which is why it is often discouraged to let it go outside without supervision. These personality traits remain however perfectly specific to each cat and vary according to each cat's character. The Ragdoll is perfectly adapted to family life and is very sociable with children.

Adulte
Most stable period. Monthly weigh-in, annual vet visit, dental care — this determines quality of life in later years.
Method: AAFP/AAHA table: 15 human years in year one, +9 in year two, then +4 per year.
These equivalences are statistical benchmarks drawn from published veterinary tables. Every animal ages at its own pace, depending on genetics, diet and care. This calculator is neither a diagnosis nor veterinary advice.
Health
Health watch
Like all pedigree and alley cats, the Ragdoll is affected by feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This disease is hereditary with autosomal dominant transmission. A breed-specific DNA test has been developed. It detects mutations in the MYBPC3 gene, responsible for the development of the disease.

The French laboratory that developed these genetic tests believes that approximately 20% of Ragdolls are affected by this gene mutation. Ultrasound monitoring is also recommended for breeders to prevent transmission and eradicate the disease. Indeed, it is known that the MYBPC3 gene mutation is not the only cause of HCM in cats. The breed is also affected by polycystic kidney disease, although this is much less common than in Persians. For future Ragdoll owners, it is recommended to ask for tests of the breeders to confirm that their offspring are not carriers of HCMPC3 and PKD. A professional and serious breeding program will give you copies of the negative (normal) tests performed by the parents.
