Chapter 1

Getting to know the Ojos azules

Origins & history

A story told

It was in New Mexico that a small tortoiseshell kitten named Cornflower was discovered in 1980. Her peculiarity was that she had blue eyes. These are normally reserved for white cats and certain colorpoint breeds. It was unheard of. To see if she could pass this gene to her descendants, she was mated with American Shorthairs and to everyone's surprise, the kittens had the same blue eyes. All combinations of coat colors became possible. Today this breed is still very rare. In 1992 there were only about ten individuals. TICA recognized the breed in 1991 and a breeders' association was founded in 1994. Recently, it was discovered that cranial malformations could result from the breed's genetic peculiarity and breeding was temporarily suspended.

Physical

Breed standard

The great peculiarity of the Ojos Azules comes obviously from its eyes. They are almost round and as large as possible. Their color is blue or dark blue-gray. Some cats may also have odd eyes, in which case the other eye is turquoise, copper or yellow. The coat can be short or semi-long. It must in any case be silky and soft. All colors are accepted but the most sought after are those that are not normally accompanied by blue eyes. White color is however not encouraged because it would then be difficult to distinguish a white cat from an Ojos Azules.
