The Nebelung is a cat breed originating from Russia. This cat is the semi-long-haired variety of the Russian Blue (with which it shares genetic characteristics). At the first feline exhibition (Crystal Palace 1871), Russian Blue cats with nebelung characteristics were already being shown.

Chapter 1
Getting to know the Nebelung
Origins & history
A story told
The instability of the early 20th century was very difficult for many breeds, some of which virtually disappeared. This is the case with Russian Blue cats. The American lineage of this breed was created by the cats Siegfried (1984) and Brunhilde (1985). Cora Cobb, the owner of Siegfried and Brunhilde, was very impressed by the beauty of these blue-gray cats. Siegfried and Brunhilde have the physique of a Russian Blue but with semi-long hair.

To find out if it was possible to start a new breed with these cats, Cora contacted the geneticist of an American feline association TICA, Dr. Solveig Pfleuger, who declared that the breed would be defined as a semi-long-haired Russian Blue. With the help of Dr. Pfleuger, Cora Cobb described the breed standard based on the Russian Blue, but with one difference: its hair length. In the breed standards of TICA (the first association to identify the Nebelung), one can find the first description. During a visit to Eastern Europe, a semi-long-haired Russian Blue was presented to Cora Cobb. Links were established. The first exchange of Nebelungs between Russia and the United States does not happen much later. This is how Georgin Winter Day joins the 'Nebelheim' breeding. In 1993/1994, the first Nebelung arrives in the Netherlands. It does not come from the United States as the beginning of the story suggests, but from Russia. In the Netherlands, a Russian Blue Fokster Letty van den Broeck unexpectedly turns out to be a carrier of the long-hair gene. This kitten confirms the possibility of the presence of the long-hair factor in the Russian Blue breed. The long-hair gene is recessive, cats can carry this gene without it being known. The first two known Nebelungs of France are Ciastek The Grey from Poland and Ölrùn Azadeh from the Netherlands. Its name is a portmanteau referring to mist (in German Nebel) and the fantastic creatures of the Nibelungs (to which the names of the two cats from which it originated refer).
Character
Daily temperament
The Nebelung is described as a lively, mischievous, affectionate, intelligent and good company cat. It lives very well indoors and is also very dexterous. Like its brother the Russian Blue, it prefers a quiet home. The Nebelung is also described as aloof with strangers but actively participating in family life. These character traits nevertheless remain perfectly individual and are above all a function of the history of each cat.
Physical
Breed standard
The physical characteristics of the Nebelung are the same as those of the Russian Blue (it is a variety of the breed as well as the White and the Black). The body is fine and elegant, the tail is long, the ears almost as wide at the base as they are tall, alert, slightly rounded tips, rather large size, spaced, quite vertical, sparse fur inside, exterior covered with short and fine hair. A plume behind the ears, wing angel, is appreciated. Eye color must be green, as dark as possible. The size is average and the body is muscular. The Nebelung is close to the English type Russian Blue. Coat color: the coat is uniformly quite bright blue, with a preference for a light color. Guard hair shows silver concentration at hair tip, giving the coat a luminous appearance. Nose leather is slate gray, pads are slate or lilac. Eye color: as vivid a green as possible in adulthood. Kittens' eyes change from yellow to green. A green circle appears around the pupil after eight months and the definitive color is reached after twelve months or more. Cats whose eyes are not a bright green must be penalized, the penalty being determined by the quantity and depth of green depending on the age of the cat. No green in the eyes or yellow eyes results in disqualification. Cats carrying 'white spots' should be excluded from breeding. Head : The contours of the head are formed by seven flat faces which are:

from the top of the skull to the forehead; from the forehead to the tip of the nose, which in profile forms a straight line; from the tip of the nose to the tip of the chin; two symmetrical faces on each side of the muzzle; two symmetrical faces formed by the wide and high cheekbones. Triangular when viewed from the front, the head is particularly wide at the level of the eyes. Muzzle : With its rounded contours, on the other hand, the muzzle, rather short and without pinch, extends the triangle of the head. The slightly raised corners of its mouth give it a soft, smiling expression. Eyes : Walnut-shaped, the eyes are quite large and well-spaced from each other. The color is as intense a green as possible in adults. Ears : As high as wide at the base, they are spaced the width of an ear apart. Covered with short and fine hair on the outside, they are supplied with longer hair on half of the inner surface. Neck : Long and fine, the neck appears heavier than it actually is due to the density of the coat. Body : Of foreign format, the body is long and elegant. Well-muscled and without any heaviness, it may appear more robust than it actually is, due to the density of the coat, especially in the Nebelung. The skeleton is fine and the musculature is powerful. Paws : Long and fine, the paws are in proportion to the body. Feet : Small and relatively round. Tail : Rather thick at the base, the tail is of medium length, reaching to the base of the shoulder blades. It is well-supplied. Coat : Of medium length, the fur is composed of a fairly fine undercoat covered with denser guard hair. Males often have a beautiful ruff which is more discreet in females. Pants are desirable as well as slight 'lynx tips' (plumes) behind the ears. Color : Blue: coat of uniform and luminous blue, with a preference for light tones. The tip of the guard hairs has a silvery coloration that gives the coat a shiny appearance, as if dusted with silver. The nose is charcoal gray and the pads dark lilac.
Crosses between Russian Blues and Nebelungs are authorized and even encouraged. This is good for the Nebelung's gene pool and does not harm the Russian Blue.

Maintenance
Daily care
For the care of a Nebelung, nothing special needs to be planned. The grooming specific to long-haired breeds is not necessary for the Nebelung. Its silky coat does not knot. It is necessary to trim the nails and ears every month, like all quality cats. This is important for ear hygiene. A fine slicker brush should be used regularly to remove dead hair. This is important during shedding to prevent hair ingestion. A metal comb is also possible. An occasional bath is possible. Bathing requires learning. You must wet your Minet gradually. An initial degreasing shampoo is followed by a 'silver' type shampoo. After towel drying, release it in a warm place. The use of a hair dryer is possible with a little learning.
