Chapter 1

Getting to know the Chausie

Origins & history

A story told

The Chausie results from a hybridization between a Chaus and a domestic cat. The first crosses took place at the end of the 1960s in order to have a cat with a wild type and close to the Chaus but with a domestic animal character. Abyssinians, Orientals, Bengals were chosen but also alley cats having a wild appearance. These first hybrids (classified as F1 for "first generation") offered an alternative to capturing the Chaus, which is a wild animal. In 1995, TICA registered the foundation of the breed, then in February 2001 it changed status to become a "breed under evaluation". In March 2003, the Chausie is promoted to "New breed" status, which allows it to access cat shows but without the possibility of obtaining a title. This is the last step before full access to championship. In France, the LOOF gives it the same status as in its country of origin. Other associations do not yet recognize the breed.

Since the breed is still young, breeders are still working on its characteristics to bring it closer to the Chaus and compete in shows. Currently, it is mostly Abyssinians that are crossed with Chausies in order to eliminate any trace of tabby while keeping the ticking of the coat.

Character

Daily temperament

The Chausie would be an active cat, tolerating solitude poorly and needing company. It would be close to its owner, extroverted, and it is also said to be a very intelligent cat. However, since these character traits are above all dependent on each cat's history, they are perfectly individual.

Physical

Breed standard

The Chausie is a large cat (particularly the males) with a long and rectangular silhouette. The musculature of the body is powerful without being very noticeable. The ribcage should not be too bulging but the chest should be quite wide. The legs are of medium length with powerful muscles but average skeletal structure. The hind legs are more powerful than most other breeds (about 3/4), but have, if possible, an identical number of vertebrae. This particularity must in no way impede the proper articulation of the tail. The head is a large triangle with contours at the base that toward the end which is rounded. Plumes are highly appreciated. The coat is short and close to the body. There are only three colors currently allowed: solid black, brown ticked tabby and black silver tipped (only breed to have this coat). Crosses with the Abyssinian, the Chaus (under certain conditions) and with any alley cat are still allowed.

Health watch

The generations of Chausie are categorized after hybridization of F1, F2, F3, F4, etc., F1 being the generation born directly from a hybridization between a domestic cat and a Chaus. The males of generations F1 to F3, even F4 are generally sterile, which considerably complicates the work of breeders to develop an already rare breed. Moreover, this breed is more sensitive to certain intestinal prob
