Chapter 1
Getting to know the Burmese
Origins & history
A story told
The Tamra Meow or Book of Poems of Cats is a Thai collection of richly illustrated verses whose writing is situated between 1350 and 1767 and which describes seventeen different cats, some bringing good luck and others not. The manuscript lists and poetically describes the cat breeds existing at that time and makes the description of the Burmese. It is possible that Burmese competed in England in the 19th century as Siamese. In 1930, an American sailor brought back to San Francisco a female cat from Burma: Wong-Mau, whose hazelnut-colored coat showed slight variations in color intensity, stronger at the extremities (legs, tail, head) without however carrying the pointed pattern. Wong-Mau is purchased by Dr. Joseph Thomson. Another version of the story considers that Joseph Thomson directly brought Wong-Mau back from Burma. The doctor performed several crosses with cats of Thai origin and in particular a seal-point Siamese in order to reproduce Wong-Mau's coat. The Cat Fancier Association (CFA) recognized the breed in 1936 under the name "Burmese" which means "Burmese" in English. The first Burmese were imported to the United Kingdom in the early 1950s and recognized by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) in 1952.
Character
Daily temperament
The Burmese is generally described as a cat with a stable and affectionate character (sometimes nicknamed 'dog-cat') and full of energy. It would be very extroverted, with a strong personality. It would also be an inexhaustible player. It is said to be quite chatty, but its voice would be softer than that of the Siamese. However, these character traits remain individual and vary depending on the history of each cat.
