Chapter 1

Getting to know the Karelian Bobtail

Origins & history

A story told

The breed likely had links with the Norwegian Forest cat during its history, a Scandinavian breed of natural origin, although no study exists proving this kinship. Specialists also considered a link between the Karelian Bobtail and the Kurilian Bobtail, a breed originating from the Kuril Islands, but it has been established that, despite their many similarities, these breeds are distinct. This cat was appreciated for its hunting qualities but the inhabitants of its native region preferred to own one because according to an ancient legend, cats without tails or with particularly short tails bring good luck to their owner. The breed was first recognized by the World Cat Federation (WCF) in 1994.
