The Russian Blue or Russian is a cat breed with controversial origins and usually considered a natural breed that appeared in cold countries such as Russia or Scandinavian countries. The first individuals are presented at feline exhibitions from the middle of the nineteenth century in Great Britain, from where it spread throughout the world. On the brink of extinction after World War II, the Russian Blue was reborn through crosses with Siamese or blue domestic cats.

Many efforts were made in the 1950s and 1960s to homogenize the type of Russian Blue, whose morphology varies from one side of the Atlantic to the other. New colour varieties were introduced at the end of the twentieth century.

Chapter 1
Getting to know the Russian Blue
Origins & history
A story told
The origins of the Russian Blue are controversial, usually attributed to Russia or Scandinavian countries, they could also be located around the Mediterranean. Illustrating the confusion of these origins, various names have been given to this breed, including 'Archangel Blue', 'Abyssinian Blue', 'Arkhangelsk Blue', 'Spanish Blue', 'Icelandic Blue', 'Norwegian Blue', 'Caucasian Blue', 'Maltese Blue' or 'Russian Blue', 'russkiy blue' in Russian. Desmond Morris also notes the terms 'American Blue Cat', 'Chartreuse Blue', 'Foreign Blue', 'Russo-American Blue', 'Russian Shorthair' and 'The Connoisseur's Cat'. One theory suggests that the breed could have originated from the Russian port of Arkhangelsk where it would have developed its dense coat over centuries, making it a natural breed. Various accounts would corroborate the fact that it was hunted for its warm fur used in clothing. It is said to have been used on ships as a rodent hunter and was introduced to Great Britain by sailors. A common origin with the Chartreux is also suggested. The Arkhangelsk theory is frequently repeated, with the date of arrival of the Russian Blue in Great Britain varying from the late 16th century during the reign of Elizabeth I to the more often cited mid-19th century. The arrival in Great Britain may have been via Sweden, or directly by sailors. Another hypothesis put forward is that the Russian Blue is a very ancient breed, that appeared in Russia, and was spread to Europe by the Vikings. Finally, a last theory proposes that the Russian Blue comes from northern Norway, from where it was imported to Great Britain under various names, particularly 'Shorthaired Blue Tabbies' or 'Canon Girdlestone's breed'.

It is said to be discreet, with a soft and melodious meow for females and would not particularly like noise nor children and would prefer its peace and a calm family life. The Russian Blue is a cat described as well adapted to apartment living. It would be sociable with other animals. The Russian Blue is described as shy and reserved, attached to its habits and intelligent by Tamsin Pickeral. Affectionate with its owner, it would follow them in their movements and loudly demand its food. Dr Bruce Fogle also emphasizes the reserved character of the Russian Blue, adapted to apartment living.
