Water is a chemical substance, a stable triatomic body represented by a bent molecule H2O revealing an angle of 104°5 between its two O-H covalent bonds. This inorganic compound, colorless, odorless and tasteless is a liquid at ordinary temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, characterized by the existence of hydrogen bonding, which justifies a wide temperature range between solidification at 0°C and vaporization at 100°C.

This liquid also shows significant surface tension, which explains the easy formation of droplets in the presence of air and easy retention in capillary ducts, particularly soil pores. The polar structure of the molecule, the electronegative oxygen providing the negative pole and the side of hydrogen atoms forming a positive pole, explains that water is a poor solvent in liquid state for non-polar compounds like hydrocarbons, and an excellent solvent for solids with ionic bonds, releasing their electrolytes as well as hydrogen-bonded compounds. The water molecule participates in hydrolysis and hydration reactions, but also in various redox reactions, revealing reactivity towards oxidants or sufficiently strong reducing agents. In many uses, the term water is used in the restricted sense of water in liquid state, or to designate a dilute aqueous solution (fresh water, drinking water, seawater, etc.) or a suspension (lime water, fatty water, wastewater, etc.) Water is ubiquitous on Earth and in the atmosphere, in its three states, solid (ice), liquid and gaseous (water vapor). Extraterrestrial water is also abundant, in the form of water vapor in space and in condensed form (solid or liquid) on the surface, near the surface or inside a large number of celestial objects. Water is an important biological component, essential in its liquid form for all known living organisms. Given its vital nature, its importance in the economy and its unequal distribution on Earth, water is a natural resource whose management is the subject of major geopolitical issues.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Aquatique

Physical

Breed standard

The Florida turtle has a lifespan estimated at approximately 30 years. When Trachemys scripta elegans is juvenile, its diet consists of 90% fish and 10% plants. This turtle is no longer freely available for sale in France as it is considered invasive. One must therefore hold a certificate of competence and authorization for opening an establishment to own it.

Chapter 2

Daily life

What if you adopted your future companion?

The Aquatique of your dreams may already be waiting in a shelter. Hundreds of aquatique (and equally wonderful crossbreeds) are looking for a family in France — every adoption starts a new story.

Nutrition

Feed your pet well

Water is the main constituent of the human body. The average amount of water contained in an adult organism is approximately 65%, which corresponds to approximately 45 liters of water for a 70-kilogram person. This percentage can nevertheless vary, the leaner a person is, the greater the proportion of water in their body. Water also depends on age: it decreases over the years, as older tissues become more dehydrated, with water being replaced by fat. In the organism, water concentration varies from one organ to another and according to cells:

The human body needs approximately 2.5 liters of water per day (1.5 liters in liquid form and 1 liter obtained from consumed food), more during physical exercise or high heat; one should not wait to be thirsty to consume it, especially for pregnant women and for the elderly in whom the sensation of thirst is delayed. Without water, death occurs after 2 to 5 days, without providing any effort (40 days without food while resting). Each day, the body absorbs on average:

3 liters for men or 2.2 for women, of water in the form of beverages; 0.7 liter for men or 0.5 for women, of water contained in food; 0.25 liter of water produced by the metabolism of energy nutrients. Each day, the body eliminates:

1 to 2 liters through urine (at minimum 0.5 liter for a properly hydrated person in normal conditions); 0.45 liter through perspiration and sweating (values increased by heat and physical activity); 0.3 (± 20%) to 0.55 (± 10%) liter in the context of physical activity, through breathing; 0.15 liter (± 10%) through feces. Eight types of water are distinguished: drinking water, tap water, bottled water, spring water, natural mineral water, sparkling water, still water and purified water. Quality controls look for possible pollutants and unwanted substances, including recently drugs, drug residues or endocrine disruptors to limit environmental and health risks from drug residues in aquatic environments.
