Chapter 1
Getting to know the Pogona
Character
Daily temperament
Physical
Breed standard
It is a lizard with a massive appearance, flattened dorso-ventrally, possessing strong claws and mobile eyelids. The wild type is brownish-gray, with lighter mottling, clearly transverse on the legs and tail. But pet shops now offer many mutant varieties with varied colors. Adult specimens measure a maximum of 50 cm in length, with the tail taking up more than half the total body length. Females are generally smaller than males. The latter have femoral pores inside the thighs, as well as hemipenal swellings at the base of the tail, visible in adults and subadults. Pogona vitticeps is able to slightly modulate the color of its scales to assist in temperature regulation. The specialized scales on either side of its throat, neck and head form small spines that run along the sides of the body and tail. These spines can be erected as a sign of threat when the animal puffs out its throat, which is a characteristic posture of this agama (see "Behavior"). Like many Agamidae, Pogona vitticeps possesses powerful legs that allow it to completely lift its body off the ground when moving. This allows it to limit the heat received from the ground and reduce its temperature by the flow of air passing under its belly. This animal can live 4 to 10 years in captivity.

Growth is complete: switch to adult food and set ration to ideal weight to prevent post-sterilization weight gain.
Estimate: Proportional estimate: a reference life expectancy of 15 years, scaled to an 80-year human life. No reference veterinary table exists for this species.
These equivalences are statistical benchmarks drawn from published veterinary tables. Every animal ages at its own pace, depending on genetics, diet and care. This calculator is neither a diagnosis nor veterinary advice.

Nutrition
Feed your pet well
Pogona vitticeps consumes both plants and small animals. Its diet includes small invertebrates (insects, arachnids, worms...), but also small vertebrates (small rodents, lizards) as well as flowers, fruits and green leaves. Mobile prey is hunted by ambush. As a juvenile, it feeds mainly on insects. Its diet is then composed of 80% insects for 20% plants. This diet reverses when it reaches adulthood, changing to 20% insects for 80% plants.
