Chapter 1
Getting to know the Phelsuma
Physical
Breed standard
Geckos of this genus are diurnal with a round pupil, with the exception of Phelsuma guentheri. They are mainly arboreal (except Phelsuma barbouri and Phelsuma ocellata, which are terrestrial), and typically live in warm and humid forests. They are medium-sized animals – 10 to 30 cm, with a generally chunky body, and with often very vibrant colors, generally green-based with blue, red, black dots or lines... They are insectivorous but many also enjoy fruit nectars. They have a peculiarity compared to other geckos: the presence of endolymphatic sacs under the neck. These sacs contain calcium carbonate and serve as a reserve for calcium regulation, especially in gravid females (to produce the eggshell).
