Vieja is a Neotropical genus of fish of the subfamily Cichlasomatinae. The geographic distribution of the genus is limited to Central America, mainly Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua. In the genus Vieja are generally valid species that reach a size between 15 and 35 centimeters. There are 16 species of Vieja currently described. The classification of several species of Vieja is controversial, several are sometimes described as part of the genus Theraps.

A more thorough investigation, including DNA studies should clarify the taxonomy in the coming years. Vieja is closely related to Paraneetroplus and some authorities, notably FishBase, have merged the former into the latter, while placing Vieja godmanni and Vieja microphthalma in the genus Theraps.
