A viviparous fish is a fish that reproduces through viviparity, that is to say by giving birth to fry rather than laying eggs like oviparous fish do. However, it is more accurate to speak of ovoviviparity and ovoviviparous fish. Indeed, if the viviparous embryo feeds in its mother's breast, the ovoviviparous embryo feeds in the egg, which hatches shortly before birth.

Yet in common parlance, we speak of viviparous, for simplicity: the word 'viviparous' almost always refers to ovovivipara, that is to say to the Poeciliidae. There are, however, viviparous fish of the histotrophic viviparous type in which embryos feed on eggs or practice intra-uterine cannibalism. Finally, Goodeidae or zoarcids, for example, reveal a mode of hemotrophic viviparity reproduction, that is to say that a specialized organ allows the passage of nutrients from the blood of the mother.
