The genus Maylandia comprises several freshwater fish species of the Cichlidae family. These fish are all endemic to Lake Malawi. All species of the genus are small in size, generally not exceeding 20 centimeters in total length. Like the majority of cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi, they reproduce by buccal incubation, where the female protects eggs and fry in her buccal cavity until they are independent.

Many species of this genus are available in the aquarium trade, appreciated for their bright colors and often pronounced sexual dimorphism. However, due to their territorial behavior and specific ecological requirements, these cichlids are generally not recommended for beginning aquarium keepers nor for home aquariums.
