Carassius is a genus of teleost fish of the order Cypriniformes and the family Cyprinidae. The name of the genus Carassius is the Latinized form of karass or karausche, a German word designating a Carassius carassius in Central Europe. Several species of carp are distinguished, including the common carp, the silver carp, or golden carp.

The species of carp are, however, very difficult to distinguish from one another in nature, so they are often referred to simply as carp without further specification. The large number of fertile hybridizations in the wild adds to this difficulty.
