Origins & history
A story told
The Aphyosemion australe comes from a coastal zone located between the mouth of the Ogooué River (also called Ogowé), northwest of Gabon near the homonymous Cape Lopez, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also found in countries such as Angola further south and Cameroon further north.
Character
Daily temperament
This species lives in harems each consisting of one male and several females. It is an oviparous fish. Once the eggs are deposited in subaquatic vegetation, they develop there for approximately fifteen days. The fry feed on live prey from hatching. Its adult diet is that of an opportunistic carnivore. It excels at jumping, which is why in captivity an aquarium with a lid is recommended. An A. australe can live from less than a year to approximately three years, perhaps more under the most favorable living conditions.
Physical
Breed standard
Measuring an average of 5 or 6 cm in length for the male, 4 or 5 for the female, its body is streamlined and flattened. There are several known local species displaying different colors. A breeding variety called "gold" is a vivid orange sprinkled with light brown or reddish spots.

Sexual dimorphism is evident, first by the difference in colors (the male is much more colorful than the light beige female), then by the shape of the fins (much more rounded in the female).
