The Canary (Serinus canaria) is a passerine species in the family Fringillidae. Its domesticated varieties are commonly called Canaries, as it originates from the Canary Islands (as well as other islands of Macaronesia). Originally, it has plumage mottled with green and brown, which allows it to camouflage itself in the trees of its natural environment. It is a cousin of the European Serin (Serinus serinus) with which it shares many common genes and whose crosses produce fertile hybrids.

It is also genetically very close to several varieties of siskins (Spinus sp.) and particularly to the Venezuelan Red Siskin (Spinus cucullatus), which enabled the fixation of the red factor in all domestic Canaries displaying this color. The Canary is the animal symbol of the Canary Islands.

The Canary measures approximately 12.5 cm and shows sexual dimorphism:
the male has plumage predominantly green with cheeks, nape and neck displaying grayish reflections, flanks slightly striped with black-brown, rump yellowish-green, wings and tail brownish-green, paler at the edges; the female is darker with the sides of the breast striped with gray and the wings noticeably paler at the edges. Both sexes have brown eyes, dark gray beak and legs.
Living conditions
What living situation?
The Canary frequents forest edges, wooded regions, scrubland, bushes, gardens, vineyards and fruit tree plantations, especially fig trees. Its presence has been reported in eucalyptus imported from Australia and it is also found in other evergreen tree species such as pines and laurels. It frequents the edges of low-altitude crop areas, orchards, gardens, dry valleys (barancos), laurel formations, open forests and mountainsides covered with scrubland and pine forests, from sea level to 1700 m (Ottaviani 2011).

Nutrition
Feed your pet well
Canaries are satisfied with a simple seed mix, composed for example as follows: canary grass 71%, niger seed 5%, rapeseed 5%, flax seed 5%, hulled oats 8%, hemp 2%, perilla 2%, chia 2%. This mix can be found commercially and can be modified by adding other seeds depending on the season. They greatly appreciate greens and fresh vegetables, such as apple, chickweed, dandelion flowers, or lettuce leaves. During breeding, it is beneficial to supplement this with egg food. This encourages parents to feed and allows better development of chicks. To allow females to produce eggshells, it is recommended to provide grit and cuttlebone.
