Cockatoo is the vernacular name for various species of the same family as parrots. They are recognized by their crest of feathers (crest), which they can raise at will on their head. Some learn very well to imitate the sounds of human languages.

Their average lifespan is 50-60 years. They are large psittaciforms from Indonesia, New Guinea and Australia, sometimes classified with the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo in a separate family (the Cacatuidae, currently considered a subfamily of Psittacidae, that of the Cacatuzine). In some classifications, the taxon of Cacatuzine is subdivided into three tribes, two of which are cockatoos:
the Calyptorhynchini, with blackish plumage; the Cacatuini, with whitish or grayish plumage. There are many genera of cockatoos, catalogued according to their appearance.
