The Rex rabbit has a phenotypic character resulting in a hair variation in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). This character results from a spontaneous genetic mutation which, unlike the Angora rabbit, gives individuals a soft, very dense and short coat, with the appearance of velvet and composed only of fine fleece 16 to 20 mm high. Since 1929, the Rex rabbit has been an official French breed presenting this character.
