Origins & history
A story told
The New Zealand originated in the United States, and corresponds to the albino variety of American colored rabbits. The animals that gave rise to the current breed appeared in the early 20th century. Various theories about their emergence exist; according to some they would come from brown New Zealand rabbits, for others they are the product of crosses between Belgian hares and golden fawns. In any case, the first rabbits qualified as New Zealand are of varied colors, well conformed following significant selection efforts in this direction.
Physical
Breed standard
The New Zealand is a medium-sized rabbit weighing between 4 and 5.4 kg. It has a massive body characterized by very strong muscular conformation. It is not very long and has a very wide croup. Its legs are short and strong. Its head is voluminous with well-developed jaws, it merges with the trunk. It bears two very robust ears, thick and very upright measuring 10.5 to 12.5 cm. A moderate dewlap is tolerated in the female. The eyes are pink, another characteristic of albinism. The coat is very dense, supple and lustrous. It is entirely white.
