Origins & history
A story told
The Belgian Hare, as it is named in Belgium, the Netherlands, England and France, while it is called "rabbit hare" in Switzerland and Germany, sees its first standard established in England in 1880, from animals imported from Belgium. These animals had certainly been obtained from crosses between Flemish Giants and wild rabbits. The Belgians and French established their respective standards in 1889 and 1900, and they have since been revised many times.
Physical
Breed standard
The Belgian Hare is a medium-sized rabbit that weighs between 3 and 4.5 kg. Its body is closer to that of a hare than that of a rabbit: it is slender, with a well-arched dorsal line and a front end carried very high by long, fine and straight legs. It should never be compact on itself. Its chest is narrow. Its head is long and fine and terminates a long nape. It bears two robust ears of 11.5 to 14 cm. The dewlap is absent in both sexes. The eyes; slightly prominent, are dark hazelnut brown. The fur is dense, quite long and lustrous. It is dark reddish in color with fire and chestnut nuances. If black hair should never be found on the chest, they sometimes scatter the cheeks and front legs. The underside of the body is straw-colored reddish. The nails are dark horn colored.
