Getting to know the Hotot
Origins & history
A story told
This breed was selected in the early 20th century and spread to Europe and North America in the 1920s. A breeder named Eugénie Bernard crossed in 1902 a French giant butterfly with a white Vienna rabbit, then a Flemish giant and the breed became fixed from 1912. An individual is exhibited for the first time at the international poultry exhibition in Paris in 1920. The breed is recognized two years later. It was exported in 1927 to Switzerland where it meets with great success. It was saved after World War II by a German breeder named Friedrich Joppich. It is recognized in East Germany in 1961. In France, the farm-museum of Cotentin displays them to the public. It is listed in the animals concerned by the conservatory of Norman and Maine breeds.
