The French Lop is a rabbit breed that was first developed in France in the 19th century. It has drooping ears like all lop rabbits. This breed is probably the result of selective breeding between the English Lop breeds and large breeds such as the Flemish Giant. The French Lop differs from the English Lop by heavier stature and shorter ears.

Chapter 1
Getting to know the French Lop
Origins & history
A story told
The French Lop was raised in France around 1850 and selected in the mid-1800s to produce a meat rabbit. The origin remains quite ambiguous today. It is thought to have been produced by crossing two existing breeds, the English Lop and the Flemish Giant, or large French regional rabbits such as the Norman Lop. The French Lop then gained popularity in neighboring countries such as Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. In 1933, it is said that ten French Lops were exported from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom, although it was not until the 1960s that the French Lop became a popular large rabbit breed in the United Kingdom. French Lops were imported to the United States in 1970-1971.
Character
Daily temperament
Due to their relatively larger size compared to other rabbit breeds, French Lops need a large hutch to move around freely. They are known to have a calm and relaxed temperament and can tolerate the presence of other species. However, they are not recommended for young children, due to the risk of injury, or for people with limited space, but can live in the home as companion animals. It is an animal with social habits that prefers to be housed with a companion, preferably another rabbit.
Physical
Breed standard
The French Lop is a very large rabbit, weighing more than 4.5 kg. It has a small, stocky body and a wide head. The head has drooping ears approximately 42 cm long and an almost cubic appearance. The front legs are short and parallel to the body. The French Lop exists in two color varieties: solid and spotted. Within these categories are a number of rabbits of different colors such as agouti, black, chinchilla. The French standard requires the following characteristics:

a compact and massive body, particularly wide and deep; absence of neck; very strong head, wide forehead, clearly hooked bridge of nose; clearly prominent crown extending well across the top of the head in width.
Living conditions
What living situation?
The French Lop is capable of living outdoors or indoors. It can live in a hutch as long as it is protected from rain, snow or heat. Indoors, a hutch or cage can be used. It is preferable to have two rabbits because a single rabbit that does not exercise regularly and lacks company can become antisocial or depressive.

The ideal age for the female French Lop to start breeding is between 9 months and one year, due to the fusion of the pelvic girdle which hinders her ability to give birth naturally if she has not had young early enough. It is recommended not to have litters after the age of three years. The French Lop can produce large litters, generally between 5 and 12 young, after a gestation period of 28 to 32 days, 31 days on average. French Lops have an average lifespan of ten years or more.
