Chapter 1
Getting to know the Meissen Lop
Origins & history
A story told
The Meissen Lop was first presented in 1900 in Germany. It is descended from the English Lop and the French Lop crossed with small silver-haired rabbits. These crosses were made in Meissen by breeders Leo Reck and Emil Neupold. This breed was listed in 2010 as the endangered breed of the year by the Gesellschaft zur Erhaltung alter und gefährdeter Haustierrassen; it has since been saved from extinction, but due to its low numbers, it has been placed on the red list of endangered breeds. This breed is not recognized in France. In the United Kingdom, it is recognized as a rare breed by the British Rabbit Council.
Physical
Breed standard
It is a medium-sized rabbit, weighing 4.5 to 5.5 kg, with a compact, wide and solid body. It is smaller than the French Lop. Like other lops, it has large drooping ears. Its dense coat is dark silver-colored (75% of subjects) or silver-gray (18% of subjects), called blue-silver. The remainder displays other colors (havana, yellow, brown, etc.).
