Chapter 1

Getting to know the Bélier

Origins & history

A story told

It was Adrian De Cock, a Dutch rabbit breeder, who developed the Meuse Lop rabbit in 1949. An enthusiastic admirer of the dwarf rabbit (less than 1.5 kg) and the French Lop, he believed the latter was significantly disadvantaged by its large size (over 5.5 kg). He therefore decided to cross these two breeds in order to obtain a miniature version of the French Lop. In 1952, Adrian de Cock raised the first specimens weighing 1.5 kg. A rabbit can live for about ten years, but the oldest recorded age is 18 years.
