The Golden Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is a small rodent originating from Syria and Turkey. It is a species of hamster very common in captivity all over the world. Some breeds of Syrian Hamster, raised as laboratory or pet animals, are even considered domestic by countries such as France. The species is also called Red Hamster, Syrian Hamster, Syrian hamster or even panda hamster, a name often given by pet stores for black and white hamsters.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Hamster Doré

Origins & history

A story told

In the wild, the Golden Hamster lives mainly in the Syrian desert, in the region of the Aleppo plateaus, but some populations have been seen in eastern Turkey. It resists well to the very dry climate and extreme temperatures of these regions where in summer the days vary from 35 to 38 ° C during the day to 6 to 15 ° C at night. If this hamster prefers desert areas, the expansion of the species led it to dig its burrows in agricultural areas, near legume plants or irrigation wells. A nocturnal animal, it comes out at night and rests during the day in a burrow to shelter from the heat or predators. Each adult lives alone in a burrow whose depth varies between 36 and 106 cm for an average of 65 cm. The total average length of all the galleries of a burrow is 2 m but some reach 9 m long. Each burrow consists of a vertical duct leading to a chamber and at least one food reserve.

Character

Daily temperament

In nature, the Golden Hamster is a solitary animal, except during breeding season. It maintains at least a hundred meters between each burrow and can even be very aggressive toward its congeners if they enter its territory. This territory is delimited by leaving olfactory traces secreted by glands located on its flanks and females deposit a vaginal fluid that lets males know they are approachable. Golden hamsters also communicate with each other through small cries and intimidating teeth grinding. These warnings were observed in 92% of encounters between males, 39% between females and only 5% between males and females. Young also produce ultrasounds intended for their mother. Certain attitudes also allow Golden hamsters to determine their hierarchical status or their ability to reproduce, but it has not yet been possible to determine whether coat variations play a role in recognition between Syrian hamsters. In order for young to be raised under favorable conditions, females are programmed to only ovulate if the light is sufficient. They also resort to cannibalism if food resources are insufficient to raise an entire litter.

Golden hamsters are omnivorous, feeding on seeds, nuts and insects, including ants, flies, cockroaches and wasps. This tireless rodent spends its nights gathering food to bring back to its burrow. In a single evening, a hamster can travel nearly 13 kilometers going back and forth. In winter, if the temperature drops below 8 ° C, the hamster has long periods of torpor but which are not really considered real hibernation entries.

This species is of average size compared to other hamsters: it measures from 13 to 18 cm on average for a weight of 100 to 125 g in adulthood. There is no apparent sexual dimorphism. Body temperature is close to that of humans: 37-38 ° C. Exposed to more than 10 weeks of cold, these animals enter a hibernation state. Unlike other species, the temperature of the golden hamster remains relatively stable. It only drops about 1 ° C below their average temperature. The photoperiod (length of day) is also a factor that regulates hibernation in these animals.

Living conditions

What living situation?

Small-sized animals, hamsters nevertheless need a sufficiently large habitat to meet their needs. Strictly solitary it is necessary to apply the golden rule: 1 hamster = 1 cage. Furthermore, whatever the species, the hamster needs a floor surface, as one block, sufficient to allow it to run to its heart's content. For Chinese and golden hamsters, the recommended minimum is 10,000 cm2, or 200 cm long × 50 cm wide, and 80 cm high. The floors don't count toward this minimum. The larger the cage and the more distractions it contains, the happier the hamsters. It is possible with certain models to combine several kits to obtain a very large cage, but since the hamster needs a large surface as one block such installations are not recommended. As distractions we can find: the very well-known hamster wheel, balls, fake food on string. You can also put a house because some hamsters are very fearful and they must therefore be able to hide.

Comfort first: warm bedding, easy access to bowls, close monitoring of weight, thirst and appetite.

Estimate: Proportional estimate: a reference life expectancy of 2.5 years, scaled to an 80-year human life. No reference veterinary table exists for this species.

These equivalences are statistical benchmarks drawn from published veterinary tables. Every animal ages at its own pace, depending on genetics, diet and care. This calculator is neither a diagnosis nor veterinary advice.

Health

Health watch

Cannibalism: If the mother hamster eats some of her young during her first litter (cannibalism), it means she lacks protein or she thinks she doesn't have enough food for the survival of all her young. Nutritional deficiency: It is characterized by hair loss and enteritis. Diarrhea or Constipation Scabies: The animal has red areas without hair, sometimes accompanied by dandruff, scales, and pus.

The animal scratches a lot. Scabies can be caused by bad hay, or favored by animal stress. Scabies is a very contagious skin disease, which is treated by a veterinarian. Ringworm: Ringworm, very contagious in animals and humans, is a fungus causing lesions around the eyes, ears, forehead and lower back. Abscesses: Often coming from a dental problem, the abscess is most often found at the level of the head of the rodent, the genital organs and the sides. Sometimes antibiotics are sufficient to treat it, we can also resort to surgery but abscess is a very difficult disease to treat that often threatens the animal's life. Tumor: Most often located at the level of the head, sides and genital organs. Tumors can sometimes be cancerous. Conjunctivitis: Conjunctivitis manifests itself by red eyes that run, whose eyelids are sometimes 'stuck' by a yellow crust. Keratitis The eye is vitreous, sometimes whitened by areas. Purulent ophthalmia It is characterized by pus in the eyes, caused by poor hygiene or too little varied diet

Nutrition

Feed your pet well

As important as the habitat, if you want to prolong the life expectancy of the animal, it needs a balanced diet meeting its nutritional needs. So each day it will need:

16% protein, 5 to 6% lipids, 4 to 8% fiber, as well as appropriate levels of phosphorus, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin E. The hamster is an omnivorous rodent which means that its diet must contain an intake of animal protein. This intake is essential for the hamster which cannot synthesize certain amino acids (lysine and methionine among others) that it finds in these animal proteins.
