Length: 8 to 9 cm; Weight: 35 grams to 60 grams; Lifespan: 1.5 to 3 years. In its natural state, Campbell's hamster lives in Mongolia, Manchuria, and northern and southern China. Its habitat is the arid steppe. For a long time, these hamsters were considered a subspecies of the Russian hamster, but today they are considered two different species. Campbell's hamster has a robust physique, with a more pronounced build than the Russian hamster. It has a more pointed head and ears, and eyes that are closer together. The natural skin color is grayish-brown, the underside is whitish; a darker line runs along the back. Campbell's hamster can have red eyes as well as black eyes, while the Russian hamster more generally has black eyes. Young are raised jointly by both parents, and these hamsters are said to be monogamous. Do not attempt to house two adult hamsters together: cohabitation should always begin in the first weeks of life. This species is shy. Family breeding operations scattered throughout Europe are working to improve both the temperament and morphology of the species.
