Chapter 1

Getting to know the Welsh Corgi Pembroke

Origins & history

A story told

The word "corgi" comes from Welsh "Cur ci", or "Cor ci", meaning "dwarf dog". In 1934, the English Kennel Club recognized Welsh Corgis Cardigan and Pembroke as two distinct breeds. Ancient breeds, although of different origins, corgis were traditionally used to drive and guard herds of cattle, ponies and geese, but also participated in the rural life of Welsh peasants because they guarded farms and hunted pests if needed. Corgis were commonly called "heelers" ("heel nippers"), because of the way they drove livestock: by nipping at their heels. Some naturally retain this atavism. The origins of the Welsh Corgi Pembroke go back to the 10th century. It has Spitz origins, but it is not known exactly whether this breed descends from Swedish Vallhund or from ancestors of present-day Schipperkes and Toy Spitz. It may have descended from the dogs of Flemish weavers who established themselves in Wales.

Character

Daily temperament

The Welsh Corgi is generally described as a lively, intelligent dog very attached to humans. Despite its small size, it possesses a dynamic temperament inherited from its past as a herding dog. It often shows itself to be curious, active and attentive to its surroundings. Corgis are renowned for their great learning capacity and responsiveness to commands. They appreciate activities that stimulate both their body and mind. Sociable, they generally develop a strong bond with their family and enjoy participating in household life. They can also show themselves vigilant and protective, making them good alert dogs. In both breeds (Pembroke & Cardigan), the temperament is often described as joyful, expressive and energetic.

Health

Health watch

The corgi is generally considered a robust breed and relatively resistant. Its average lifespan is between 12 and 15 years. However, like many dog breeds, it can be predisposed to certain conditions related mainly to its morphology. Because of its elongated body and short legs, the corgi may have an increased risk of spinal problems, particularly intervertebral disc disease, which can cause pain o

r mobility difficulties. Maintaining an appropriate weight and avoiding excessive jumping can help reduce this risk. The breed may also be subject to certain hereditary diseases, such as hip dysplasia, which affects the joints, as well as eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy, a disease that can lead to progressive vision loss. The corgi also tends to gain weight if it does not benefit from a balanced diet and sufficient physical activity. Regular veterinary monitoring, appropriate diet and daily exercise generally help maintain good health.
