The turnspit dog, an English term meaning spit-turning dog, was a short-legged and twisted-legged dog with a long body. This dog, resembling the Welsh Corgi, was used in the kitchen to turn a wheel shaped like a squirrel cage or cartwheel, connected to a roasting spit and in which it was enclosed.

These dogs were therefore considered kitchen utensils or pieces of machinery rather than pets. With mechanization and the generalization of machines throughout the United Kingdom, the use of turnspit dogs eventually disappeared from kitchens, with the consequence of extinction of this dog breed, with rare specimens still being used in a few isolated cottages too poor to afford a mechanized roasting spit. These dogs also sometimes served as foot warmers during winter masses.

Getting to know the Turnspit dog
Physical
Breed standard
The turnspit dog, a dog small enough to fit into a roasting wheel, is related to the Welsh Corgi ("Welsh corgi" in English) and whose name derives from the Welsh "Cor ci" meaning "dwarf dog". The naturalists William Bingley, Carl von Linné (who calls it Canis vertigus) and Charles Darwin evoke the existence of this specific dog breed weighing between 11 and 16 kg, about 33 cm in height and with drooping ears and particularly strong front paws.
