Getting to know the English Black and Tan Terrier

Origins & history

A story told

The black and tan Toy Terrier probably descends from the Manchester Terrier. Very popular in the 19th century, the breed is present in wealthy English homes where it serves as a ratier and "toy dog." However, the black and tan Toy Terrier is now extremely rare even in its country of origin. With 32 registrations in 2022 and 9 registrations in 2023 in the French stud book (LOF), the breed is poorly represented in France. The Number 1 breeding in France is the Of Tall And Small breeding which holds all registrations in the Book of Origins for the year 2023. In the United Kingdom, with between 95 and 136 registrations on the British Kennel Club registers each year between 2004 and 2013, the breed is considered a vulnerable native breed (Vulnerable native breed).

Character

Daily temperament

The standard of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale describes the English Toy Terrier black and tan as a lively dog. The breed is joyful, docile, intelligent, affectionate and playful.

Physical

Breed standard

The English Toy Terrier black and tan is a small terrier dog, with an elegant and compact appearance. Well proportioned, the dog possesses dry musculature and fine bone. Attached low and thick at birth, the tail tapers to the tip that does not reach the hock. The long and narrow head is wedge-shaped, the skull is flat and the stop is light. The muzzle is wedge-shaped, it ends with a well-black nose. Almond-shaped, the fairly small eyes are dark-colored and arranged obliquely. Placed high and fairly close together, the ears are straight, long and shaped, called "candle flames" and the tip is slightly sharp. Folded forward, the ears reach the eye. The coat is dense, tight and shiny. The coat is black and tan. The tan is described as the color of a "new chestnut with a warm tone", while the black is ebony. The markings are well drawn and do not mix. The tan color is distributed on the front limbs from the foot to the carpus, on the back limbs from the foot to below the elbows. The fingers bear a "pencil stroke," that is, a thin black line on each finger. A black mark called "thumb mark" is present on the limbs and under the chin. The tan color spreads from each side of the muzzle and only the top of the muzzle is black. On the head, the tan spots are located above the eyes, on each cheek, the inside of the ear, the lower jaw, the throat and on the muzzle except at the top of the muzzle.
